Lavender Farm History
We moved to Dylan's (Named after bob Dylan), Kaikoura in
1990 opening our accommodation cottages around the year
1994. The Mahoe & Kowhai country cottages were both
named after native NZ trees and were and still are surrounded
by many native New Zealand Trees.
Due to the fact that the soil on our 13 acre farm is stony and
well draining, we knew it would be perfect for growing
lavender. We opened our farm (lavendyl) and a on-site shop
in December of 1999.
Planting began with 500 Lavender plants in the back paddocks
and these first 500 plants grew and flowered really well,
creating a stunning show of color accompanied by the
wonderfull smell of fresh lavender.
Due to the success of these initial lavender plants, the year
2000 saw the front paddock, originally an old orchard, leveled
and planted with a further 1200 plants.

In 2001-02 we planted an additional 1000 plants in the side
paddocks, in plots rather than rows and increased the size
of the shop further in 2000 and 2004.
Overall we have planted a combination of
- Angustifolias(true English and edible)
ie Pacific blue, Hidcote, Twickle and
Violet Intrigue. - Intermedias (larger and more camphorus)
ie Grosso our main crop, Super, Miss
Donnington, Seal, Scottish cottage and
Impress Purple.
We distill our flower heads on site for essential oil and
Lavender Water (Hydrosol). We pick flowers for drying
during the months of Dec-Feb.
Adding interest to our large gardens are deep peripheral
borders containing natives, roses, perennials, shrubs etc
and of course many varieties of lavender. We also have
over 100 Thyme plants surrounding a seating pit, 200
Rosemary shrubs , established fruit trees, a vege garden
and a small nursery.
With a fast growing product range we have now added an
online store so that more people would have access to our
lavender essential oils and other lavender crafts and products.
